What are the Manufacturer's Feeding Recommendations?
Guidelines for feeding each product as shown on the bag should be realistic to meet the bird's requirements.

These guidelines take digestibility, overall nutritional value and product into consideration. For most effective comparisons between bird foods, the factors listed should be similar between products. At Lake's we encourage comparison because our diet has stood the test of time. We believe that when the customer is informed, they will choose the best food for their bird.

What about feeding my bird table food?
Some owners feed their birds "table food." Many people feel that because the food we eat is good for us, it has to be good for their birds. However, the food we eat may not necessarily be the best balanced nutrition for our birds. Because of this, many owners find that they end up supplementing vitamins and minerals. Supplementing the proper amount of vitamins and minerals to table food is difficult, and may cause potential under or overdoses. Lake's recommends table food be fed only as treats, so as not to change the nutritional balance.

How do I know if my bird's food is fresh?
Lake's does not use confusing or hard to distinguish codes or lettering on our bags. For the benefit of all our customers we have stamped the "better if used by" date on the easy open pull strip on the top of the bag. When properly stored, Lake's recommends their diets be fed by the date stamped on the easy-open pull strip on top of the bag.

To assure that your bird gets the freshest food possible:
  • Purchase food which your bird will consume before the date stamped on the top of the bag.
  • To extend shelf life when temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit, refrigerate or freeze.
  • To maintain the nutritional value, store weekly amounts in a separate container.
  • Provide your bird with clean, dry food bowls and fresh water daily.
  • Place your birds food and water in a location which will be away from droppings, and other waste.
