| How do I feed my baby bird Lake's Hand-Rearing Formula? |
|
It is generally best to allow a strong, Healthy, newly hatched chick to rest for 2-4 hours before feeding.
Always add formula to hot water (130-150 degrees). FEED WHEN TEMPERATURE DROPS BETWEEN 98 AND 104 DEGREES. Improper feeding temperatures may cause crop burn, poor digestion, or regurgitation and aspiration. DO NOT OVERHEAT FORMULA.
|
NOTE: Mixing ratios are by volume measurements. The experienced hand-feeder can mix formula to the same previously accustomed consistency.
| |
STEP ONE: NEWLY HATCHED BABIES
|
MIXTURE: Add 1 part of LACTO-Plus to 6 parts of non-chlorinated water for first 2-4 feedings.
| |
STEP TWO: DAY OLD BABIES
|
MIXTURE: Add 1 part formula to 3 parts water.
Three times a day, just prior to feeding, generously sprinkle in LACTO-Plus . Feed this consistency until formula is being digested, as indicated by the change in baby's droppings at two or three days old.
| |
STEP THREE: ONCE DIGESTION HAS BEGUN
|
MIXTURE: Add 1 part formula to 2 parts hot water.
At least once per day, just prior to feeding, generously sprinkle in Lake's LACTO-Plus. Feed this consistency until weaning for cockatiels and smaller baby birds. Start with this consistency when converting babies from any similar diet. Note: Do not feed too thick a mixture.
| |
STEP FOUR: FOR LARGER SPECIES OF BIRDS OVER 3 WEEKS OLD
|
MIXTURE: Add 2 parts formula to 3 parts water.
This is the preferred consistency for larger species of baby birds over 3 weeks of age and for spoon-feeding. Add LACTO-Plus once per day until weaned.

| Do you have any hand-rearing suggestions? |
|
When preparing formula, use non-chlorinated water whenever possible. Do not use water of unknown quality. Use Purified or distilled bottled water.
Clean out baby's mouth and feeding utensils of any formula after every feeding. Separate feeding utensils are recommended for each baby.
To avoid contamination and nutritional loss, do not reuse an already prepared formula for later feedings.
When mixing larger Quantities, add more formula than desired, then dilute and cool to feeding temperature with cold water for immediate feeding.
When feeding a thicker formula, longer intervals will naturally occur between feedings. When properly feeding formula to a healthy bird, the formula will evenly digest through the crop.
A baby bird will be difficult to wean on more than one feeding a day. As soon as the baby is able to pick up food, offer Lake's Maintenance Pellets or Mini-Pellets dry, or softened with warm water for weaning. A baby bird must learn to drink water to aid digestion and weaning to a dry diet.
