What nutritional standards are there for bird food?
At this point there are no set nutritional standards for bird food. However, field research has been conducted by both veterinarians and breeders. Through these studies, there has been some degree of success in determining what our birds nutritional requirements are. However, without N.R.C. Standards set for birds kept in captivity, we must work with quality, balance, results, and nutritional research, to insure that all our avian species will be here today, as well as tomorrow. We must remember that Extinction is forever! All Lake's diets are formulated with ingredients and quality in mind, for the longevity of your birds and ours.

Why should I be concerned about the fat levels in bird foods?
Their are many concerns brought up by when using a diet which is too high in fat content. Most people are aware of the problems we face when we consume too much fat. Many of these same concerns are the same, when feeding our bird a diet which is too high in fat. There are, however, several which are more common in birds and can cause potential problems.

One of the main problems with high fat levels in bird food, is that too much fat in a diet can lead to obesity. An overweight bird may bird loose much of their energy.

Another problem when using a diet which has a high fat content, is that it will collect in the bird, causing fatty deposits. These deposits are most noticeable in the chest of the bird.

The best advice is to stay with a diet which has a lower fat content, one which has been found to have beneficial amounts of fat in the diet. In addition to this, make sure your bird gets plenty of exercise. Exercise will help your bird keep it's fat levels down, and stay healthier.
